Sensex plummets 214 pts, Bank, Sugar tanks

Reporting from NSE Trading screen : Sensex open on a flat note at 17,230 and move up to a high of 17,248 in morning deals. Profit-taking at higher levels saw the index drop to a low of 16,998 - an intra-day swing of over 250 points. The Sensex finally closed near the day's low with a loss of 214 points (1.24%) at 17,009. The Nifty was down 51 points at 5,064.

Bank and Sugar stocks took the biggest hit. All big sugar counters Bajaj Hindustan, Dhampur got crushed by 6% or more. Tata Steel dropped 4% to Rs 552. SBI was down 3% at Rs 2,385.

Bank stocks has been gaining consistently and there is a clear profit booking across the board.
